DESIGN Canberra’s Third Place Closing party

Credit: 5 Foot Photography.
Come together, reflect on the ideas and inspiration of the 2020 DESIGN Canberra festival and have a well-deserved good time at the Third Place closing party.
Support wellbeing and creativity, local and community… and celebrate the annual design auction of experimental, small scale or one-off pieces from Australian designers. After a tough 2020, it’s time to care.
DESIGN Canberra will transform the CCAS gallery into our own Third Place. A place between home and work, Third Places are where we exchange ideas, have a good time, and build relationships, based on sociologist Ray Oldenburg’s work.
After spending much of the year trying to stay apart from other people and smoke, hail and fires, it feels wonderful that we can now be together again in line with social distancing.
The closing party will feature a lighting installation, live music, wholefood supper boxes, custom tonics and more, set among the signature festival exhibitions on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.
$35 per person, including a supper box and a signature cocktail.
Happening Saturday 28 November from 6.30–9 pm at Canberra Contemporary At Space, Reconciliation Place, Parkes.
See designcanberrafestival.com.au/event/third-place-design-canberra-closing-party for tickets and more information.
Canberra Aqua Park

That’s right, Canberra Aqua Park will return for another summer of blow-up obstacle fun in the heart of Canberra on Saturday 28 November.
The 1,600 square metre inflatable obstacle course is located at the Tarcoola Reach swimming area (park at Black Mountain Peninsula).
Canberra Aqua Park will run through the warmer months and we bet it will be a popular spot for getting the kids out of the house over the school holidays, with 50-minute sessions starting from just $20 per person.
But don’t fret—those of you that are young at heart are most definitely welcome to partake in all the fun too as there is no age limit—although there is a minimum age of five.
Happening Saturday 28 November 2020 – March 2021 at the Tarcoola Reach swimming area adjacent to Black Mountain Peninsula.
See canberraaquapark.com/tickets for more information.

This year’s theme is ‘Fearless’. We live in an uncertain time. And yet, amid the physical, cultural and economic challenges affronting us at every level—from personal to global—now is the time to engage.
At TEDxCanberraWomen 2020, we will call upon our collective fearlessness to create a global step forward together.

DESIGN Canberra Festival (FINAL WEEK)

My Country Graphic Intervention by Kayannie Denigan. Credit: 5 Foot Photography.
Design is in Canberra’s DNA.
Canberra is one of the few designed national capital cities in the world and the local Ngunnawal People’s culture of invention has been in motion for more than 75,000 years. Walter and Marion Griffin’s visionary design a century ago, iconic experimental modernist architecture of the 1950s and 60s, and contemporary and sustainable design developments today, are some of the many ways that Canberra has been—and will always be—a living design laboratory.
From 9-29 November, DESIGN Canberra will experiment with new ideas and expand the most successful programs into new directions in the 2020 festival. Over 200 events, exhibitions, talks, tours, activations, markets, collaborations, artist studios and open homes will once again transform the nation’s capital into a new platform for the best in design. The festival, now in its 7th year, is for all interests and ages and most events are free.
DESIGN Canberra is the major outreach activity for Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre — a not-for-profit membership-based organisation which supports local artists, designers and makers at every stage of their careers. The festival is delivered in collaboration with industry, associations and educational institutions committed to the design arts and creative industries in Canberra.
Happening until 29 November at various locations across Canberra
See designcanberrafestival.com.au for more information.

Know My Name: Australian Women Artists 1900 to Now

[section] Yvette Coppersmith Nude self portrait, after Rah Fizelle 2016, oil on linen, 91.5 (H) x 66.0 (W) cm, Private collection, © Yvette Coppersmith.
This exhibition is part of a series of ongoing initiative by the National Gallery to increase the representation of artists who identify as women in its artistic program, featuring lesser-known and leading artists such as Margaret Preston, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Destiny Deacon and Julie Rrap, this exhibition tells a new story of Australian art.
Highlights include a floor-to-ceiling presentation of artists’ portraits in a variety of mediums, the work of pioneering performance artists Bonita Ely and Jill Orr and a complete edition of Tracey Moffatt’s first major series of photographs, Something more 1989. Gemma Smith has been commissioned to paint the walls of the galleries.
By bringing together artists from different times, places and cultures, this exhibition proposes another history, upending the assumption that modern and contemporary Australian art is a male-dominated narrative.
Showing until 31 January 2021 at the National Gallery of Australia, Parkes.
See nga.gov.au for more information.
Film Screening: Tripping with Nils Frahm

When Nils Frahm kicked off his world tour at Funkhaus Berlin in January 2018 to bring his highly acclaimed album All Melody to the stage, an ambitious journey was just to begin: Over the next two years, Frahm played more than 180 sold-out performances, including the Sydney Opera House, LA’s Disney Hall, the Barbican in London, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, and several big festivals stages around the globe.
Yet the stunning setting of Funkhaus Berlin, renowned for its vintage grandeur and outstanding acoustics, and also home to Frahm’s magnificent studio where All Melody was recorded, had occupied a unique place in the artist’s heart.
In December 2018, Nils Frahm eventually returned to Funkhaus Berlin to host another set of four shows, tickets sold out within hours. Frahm’s friend and film director Benoit Toulemonde – a collaborator since 2011 – captured the concerts on film, only using handheld cameras, and employing techniques he had mastered for the famous concert series La Blogoteque, which featured some of the world’s most popular artists.
Tripping with Nils Frahm is an illustration of Nils’s lauded ability as a composer and passionate live artist as well as the enchanting atmosphere of his captivating, and already legendary Funkhaus shows: An extraordinary musical trip – rare and exclusive, close and intimate, bringing a unique concert experience to screen.
Happening Friday 27 November from 7 pm at Canberra Theatre Centre.

Australian Dreams: Picturing our Built World

For over 200 years, painters, printmakers and photographers have been in a creative conversation with the built environment. Reflecting progress, social ideas, understanding of the world and how we have changed over time, the exhibition Australian Dreams: Picturing our Built World shows how, through images, these artists have documented, interpreted, and celebrated a variety of buildings from the Opera House and Flinders Street Station to the inner city terrace and the humble bush cottage.
Sometimes beautiful, sometimes ugly, these buildings are the backdrops to life. They reflect a sense of identity, hopes and dreams, rendered in bricks and mortar.
Drawing exclusively from the collections of the National Library, the exhibition features photographs, prints, drawings and paintings by Augustus Earle, Conrad Martens, S T Gill, Eugene von Guérard, Lionel Lindsay, Harold Cazneaux, Olive Cotton, Mark Strizic, David Moore, Max Dupain, Jeff Carter, Ruth Maddison, Wolfgang Sievers and John Gollings.
Free entry.
Showing until 31 January 2021 at the National Library of Australia, Parkes.
