All grown up and kissing boys, Lucy Sugerman debuts new single

Posted on

Lucy Sugerman has changed a lot since her The Voice days three years ago.

She has grown up and found her own musical direction which she is putting out to the public via a new debut single and will perform at an upcoming local concert at the end of the month.

Lucy has been cutting her teeth performing around Canberra since she was just nine and rocketed to national attention when she was a contestant on The Voice.

While some things never change—and Lucy continues to express her thoughts and emotions through music—her delivery and subject matter has definitely matured.

The 19-year-old is visually inspired by her Vietnamese heritage, and sonically inspired by her songwriting heroes from the 60s and 70s (Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks to name just a few) as well as the bedroom pop movement, and her everyday experiences of modern love and life.

The result is confessional pop with a knack for clever lyricism and catchy relatable topics—none more so than her debut single ‘i wanna kiss boys cos I’m bored’.

Blending playful guitar-driven pop with a retro twist and an upbeat hook, the song chronicles Lucy’s struggles and triumphs in romance and growing up, and captures the humour and spirit of learning from her own experiences. It was co-written and produced with Hauskey and MUKI.

“As we all tend to do at some point or another, I went through a long period of seeing other people solely to try and get over an ex. It’s safe to say, it didn’t help and left me feeling quite hollow afterwards every time.”

“I’d be telling someone I don’t want anything serious, and they’d say the same, and then for some twisted reason, we’d end up talking about our exes. Feelings are weird. ‘i wanna kiss boys cos i’m bored’ explores the concept of those kind of rebound relationships in a bit of cheeky and tongue-in-cheek way, and how they really (unfortunately) do not work for me. ”

Directed by Lucy herself along with videographer Chris Walsh, and with the help of a bunch of her mates and Canberra creatives including Kirklandd, the music video sees Lucy invite all of her exes to a ‘coffee date’ that is a little more like a relationship interrogation… poking fun at modern dating and stereotypes.

Filmed at Kita in Narrabundah, where Lucy and her mates spend many late nights working and catching up, Lucy said it was really fun to put her thoughts and lyrics to images.

In 2019, Lucy sold out her headline shows at Smith’s Alternative, opened for X-Factor winner Dami Im and spent the year writing and perfecting her craft alongside some of Australia’s most esteemed writers and producers (Alex Lahey, Dustin Tebbutt, LANKS, Dylan Nash).

She was also named the National Folk Festival Youth Ambassador in 2020, was the recipient of one of APRA AMCOS’ Women in Music Mentorship.

To celebrate her debut single release, Lucy is headlining at a special performance at The Abbey on Friday 27 November featuring special guests, brand new music, a 4-piece live band, and supported by local powerhouse angels LIV LI and Finn Burton.
