What we’re watching this week to get us through lockdown

Posted on

There’s nothing better than escaping to another world when things feel so shaky and uncertain in our own.

Whether you’re delving into a book, podcast, movie or TV series, a break from your social media news feeds and the news cycle is a great idea if you’re finding you’re doing a little too much mindless scrolling during lockdown.

On a scale of mind-numbing-and-easy-to-watch to absolutely-addictive-and-can’t-stop-watching, here is what I have been loving on streaming services.

Cruel Summer

Starting off as a psychological thriller, Cruel Summer follows the story of teens Jeanette and Kate from 1993 to 1995.

After Kate goes missing, former outcast Jeanette takes her place as the most popular girl in school before being linked to Kate’s disappearance and becoming the most hated girl in America.

Each episode tells the story of the same day over 1993, 1994 and 1995, showing how Kate and Jeanette’s lives changed dramatically—and always leaving you with questions about who is telling the truth.

You can watch Cruel Summer on Amazon Prime

Nine Perfect Strangers

I have been waiting for this one since it was announced that Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy were in Byron Bay to start filming…and it has not disappointed!

Based on Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name, the mini-series follows the journey of nine stressed-out individuals who gather at the secluded Tranquillum for a 10-day health retreat.

While on the surface everything seems luxurious, the guests are forced to face the issues that brought them to the retreat in the first place—and begin to question what is really happening behind the scenes.

The first five episodes are now live on Amazon Prime with the final four being released on a weekly basis.

Chesapeake Shores

Netflix has begun releasing Season 5 of Chesapeake Shores and if you’re looking for wholesome small-town content, this is for you.

Season One kicks off with Abby O’Brien returning to her hometown of Chesapeake Shores after receiving a phone call from her sister, Jess, who needs Abby’s help to keep her inn from foreclosing.

In the classic ‘girl returns home to a small-town’ narrative, Abby must navigate the family dynamics that come with being one of five children with divorced parents and the re-emergence of an ex-fiancé while in the midst of a divorce herself.

Following the stories of the O’Brien family as they work through love, loss, career changes and family dynamics, Chesapeake Shores is the perfect drama series if you’re looking for something to make you feel a little lighter.

Grace & Frankie

If you’re a fan of Jane Fonda and looking for a comedy based on unexpected friendships, this is for you!

The first four episodes of Season 7 of Grace & Frankie have been released on Netflix, with a great final season expected to premiere in 2022 (thanks to COVID-19 delaying production). This means you have six seasons to binge watch

After discovering their husbands have been living double lives for 20 years, are in love and are leaving their wives to be together, Grace and Frankie are forced to live together, learn to tolerate each other, and navigate the family drama that comes with such a secret.

The Office (US)

This one doesn’t need much of an explanation. If you’re looking for background noise, something easy to switch off and watch or a cheap laugh, The Office is a great option.

All nine seasons are available on Netflix and you’re almost sure to not run out of episodes anytime soon!

The Notebook

A classic. If you’re looking for an escape for a few hours, I highly recommend getting caught up in the love story of Noah and Ally again… because surely, you’ve seen this one multiple times right?

Also great if you’re looking for an outlet for a few tears. We don’t judge.

Find it on Netflix or Binge

The Greatest Showman

It’s fun, has a great soundtrack and stars Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron…need I say more?

The Greatest Showman is the perfect pick me up for the lockdown blues, especially if you need to get the whole family on board.

Watch it on Disney+
