Shakespeare by the Vines: A Midsummer Nights Dream by Lakespeare & Co.
Pialligo Estate and Lakespeare & Co. are delighted to introduce Shakespeare by the Vines, a dinner and theatre event like no other in Canberra.
Enter a world of wine, food, fairies and fun, see what fools these mortals be. Set in the stunning Glasshouse space on the beautiful Pialligo Estate with sunset views of the olive grove, and nearby vines and orchards.
Just minutes away from the city’s centre, enjoy a glass or two of crisp Canberra wine, a plate or four of amazing local produce, take in the venue’s high glass walls, gardens, glorious natural light and immerse yourself in Lakespeare & Co.’s bespoke, bold and vibrant performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
One of the most presented and popular comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream gives you three stories: the trials of four young lovers trapped in a forest, the tension between Fairy Queens Oberon and Titania, and the antics of a group of would-be artisans (‘the mechanicals’) trying to stage an ancient play. Feuding families, parental control and magical madness mix together in Lakespeare’s third production.
There is no show in Canberra like this show. While tickets are limited for the two shows, the memories won’t be.
Happening Thursday 27 February 2020 and Friday 28 February 2020, from 6 pm to 10 pm at Pialligo Estate, 18 Kallaroo Road, Pialligo.
See thepialligoestate.com.au for more information.

PROMISCUOUS PROVENANCE
Promiscuous Provenance encourages a re-examination of our relationship with our colonial past. Artist Anna Glynn creates a fantasy world, caught between reality and imagination as she plunders historical archives for inspiration.
She draws on the historical practice of copying as a way of expanding the reach of a work and seeking scientific learning. In creating strange natural history tableaux, featuring bizarre reimagined hybrid characters, she encourages the viewer to reflect on the experience of colonisation, and to reawaken a sense of wonder when interacting with our environment.
Promiscuous Provenance is a travelling exhibition from Shoalhaven Regional Gallery Nowra. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.
Cost: Free entry.
Happening until 1 March from 9.30 am – 4.30 pm at Australian National Botanic Gardens.

HAM DARROCH: PROPELLER AT THE ANU DRILL HALL GALLERY
ANU Alumni and Canberra based artist Ham Darroch opens the Drill Hall’s 2020 exhibition program with a dynamic ensemble of colour, geometry and object-based form.
In his paintings and object based sculptures Darroch investigates the visual tradition of hard edge abstraction of the 1960’s and 70’s.
His works evoke a strong carry over of the enigmatic conceptualism of Marcel Duchamp and he makes wide ranging references to other works of Australian and non-Australian modern and pre-modern artists.
Showing until 12 April at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery, Acton.

ADAPTATION
Local artist Sian Watson presents a collection of figurative sculptural works that explores our shared vulnerability with nature in this shifting landscape.

Through the fusion of humans and animals she creates works that question these relationships and understandings and invites the viewer to create their own imaginative conclusions.
Showing until 29 March at Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen.

PRIMED: SOME PRIME MINISTERS
Only seventeen of Australia’s thirty prime ministers to date are represented in the National Portrait Gallery’s collection.
Their portraits have been acquired in random order, mostly according to unexpected opportunity. This is the first time in the Gallery’s 20-year history that the esteemed prime ministers’ portraits have been shown as a group.
The contrasting sizes, moods and mediums of these portraits, and the different ways they have become available, reflect the exhilarating variety across the collection as a whole.

DEMOCRACY. ARE YOU IN?
Democracy is a living system and it work best when there is a healthy balance between trust and distrust – but that balance is tipping. Distrust is on the rise, and confidence in our political and social institutions is at its lowest point in decades.
Told through powerful stories of democracy in action, this exhibition will provoke thought and motivate visitors to recognise the power of their voice.
This contemporary exhibition uses a range of photographs, objects and audio visual elements in unique and engaging ways and aims to both empower and inspire visitors to recognise that our freedoms and our way of life are built on the foundation of democracy. Visitors are encouraged to come to their own conclusions about where Australia’s democracy sits on a global scale.
“Our democracy needs us. Are you in?”

Early maps and plans will help show how six pioneering families made Ginninderra home – before it was all taken from them. The stories of these settler families are well illustrated with photographs, maps and plans.
Showing until 29 March 2020 at Hall School Museum and Heritage Centre.

onetoeight: Australia’s first prime ministers
Visually arresting, humorous and thoughtful, Canberra-based artist Alison Alder reinterprets and reinvigorates portraits of the first eight prime ministers in onetoeight, a contemporary art exhibition. Developed from Alder’s fellowship with the Australian Prime Ministers Centre and motivated by the early period of our nation’s democracy, onetoeight brings these important historical figures a little bit closer to us.
Inspired by a picture of Stanley Bruce’s cabinet where they were all wearing a lapel badge, Alder presents each prime minister wearing at least one badge to reference a key aspect of their time in office. Neither explicitly positive or negative, we are left to form our own opinion.
Through the portraits, intense patterned wallpaper honouring the prime minister’s wives and a Term-O-Meter animation tracking the changing political hues of individuals and governments, Alder gives us a sense of our nation’s history that is lively, dynamic and parallels the present day.
Showing at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. Find out more at moadoph.gov.au.
