Wine and food festival brings laneway to life

Posted on

Civic’s Tocumwal Lane may look relatively unassuming most of the time, but this month it will be transformed into a vibrant food and wine hub as part of the Canberra Wine Laneways Festival.

Kicking off at 5pm on 23 November, the two-night event will include street food, a line-up of local musicians and wines from 15 of the region’s best vendors.

The event is being hosted by the Canberra District Wine Industry Association, the peak body for the local wine industry. The Association’s Executive Officer Phillip Jones says each evening will have a distinctly different atmosphere to encourage guests to make it part of their city experience.

“Friday evening will suit shoppers and those people looking to enjoy some wine then go on for a movie or dinner nearby, or join us afterwards, and the musical acts will be more acoustic and jazz/folk ambience,” Phillip says.

“Saturday evening will offer a ‘sip then dine’ ambience early on, then a blues/jazz vibe later to encourage people to make plans for a night in the city— including perhaps a ‘staycation’ to stay overnight in one of the hotels.”

Tickets include unlimited entry for both nights, along with a collectable tasting glass to try drops from vendors including Collector Wines, Contentious Character, Lake George Wines, Lerida Estate and Mount Majura Vineyard.

The event will also feature a tantalising line-up of street food options including gourmet picnic company Schmicnics, Japanese food project Ramen Daddy and Latin American barbecue master Hector Asado.

Known for its superhero graffiti, Tocumwal Lane was the perfect choice for the event, says Phillip.

“It’s a cool little Canberra grunge alley that will be transformed into a vibrant space for two nights,” says Phillip.

“The festival—made possible by the support of The City Renewal Authority, and the cooperation of the local Civic businesses—will be a catalyst to bring the area to life as we’ll attract over 1500 people including families, tourists and lovers of food and wine to the city.”
