Five cracking outdoor bars to visit now that summer has finally shown up

Posted on

After the 18+ months we’ve endured, I sure as heck didn’t sign up for December 2021’s take on “summer weather”.

Earlier this week I watched the gum trees outside HerCanberra’s NewActon office bend almost horizontal in the wind. It was a cosy, wintery vibe BUT HAD NO ONE TOLD THE WEATHER IT’S DECEMBER?

Luckily, the outrage of 400,000 Canberrans who want a proper summer seems to have *manifested* some sun—and what better way to celebrate than heading to an outdoor bar this weekend?

We’re so relieved to see so many Canberra venues not only thriving after the Territory’s second lockdown, but even opening new ventures! So here’s a mix of old and new favourites to get the summer started (properly, this time).

The Jetty (Parkes)

The vibe: The buzzy excitement that comes with the opening of a new pop-up bar (courtesy of Kingston’s The Dock).

Order: A grazing board and some BentSpoke tinnies.

Armada Bar (Barton)

The vibe: Elevated lakeside chic. It’s the second summer of The Boat House’s outdoor offshoot.

Order: A bottle of fizz to share with the table and some oysters. Oh—and try the chips!

The Pop Inn (Barton)

The vibe: Canberra’s OG pop-up outdoor bar. Bring a picnic rug.

Order: A glass of local wine

The Pop Up will be in Bowen Park from 17-19 December | Check opening times here

The Bar at Snapper & Co. (Yarralumla)

The vibe: Relaxed family-friendly lakeside picnic spot

Order: A pitcher of Pimms for the table (they also serve gelato!)

The House of Bubbles (Kingston)

The vibe: Champagne served out of a vintage van. Yes, you read that right

Order: Champagne (obviously) or an Aperol Spritz

House of Bubbles will be in Lennox Gardens and Norgrove Park this weekend | Check opening times here

The Howling Moon (Braddon)

(Okay, this isn’t technically an outdoor bar, it’s an enclosed rooftop bar…but it sure is nice to be there on a sunny day)

The vibe: Vibrant cocktails and views for days

Order: One of their signature cocktails and a pizza to share
