Five sweet treats to get you out of bed this winter
Posted on
Congratulations, we have made it over halfway through winter!
With most of our travel plans on halt, we must take advantage of our time at home in Canberra, instead of the endless complaining, wishing winter was over already.
Why not take from the Danish ‘hygge’ and embrace the cold with a sense of joy? To help you embrace the simple pleasures of a Canberra winter, we’ve rounded up five of our favourite sweet treats to warm your belly and soul.
Kardemummabullar from UNDER Bakery (Mawson)

Open Thursday-Sunday head to UNDER and discover these sweet Swedish buns. We recommend the Cardamon bun or kardemummabullar.
You might have seen these beautiful treats at local cafes and markets. Now, they have their very own home in Mawson with UNDER Bakery opening its doors last November.
Cosy up with a coffee and a Scandinavian pastry this weekend to ease some of those winter blues.
Tart at Silo Bakery (Kingston)

Tucked away in the Kingston shops is one of Canberra’s best bakeries, Silo. It can be overwhelming to pick from the beautiful artisanal pastries on display in the window.
We recommend one of their seasonal tarts, above is a mandarin. Enjoy the bustle of the weekend crowd and indulge in some people-watching and pastry-eating.
With one bite you will forget all about the cold!
Fruit Toast at Intra (Campbell)

For something warm and hearty head to INTRA for a thick slab of fruit toast topped with whipped ricotta cream and house-made jam (currently served with a pretty pink rhubarb).
You could spend hours and countless cups of coffee in the sleek moody atmosphere, open every day until two.
Cinnabun from Sweet Bones (Braddon)
Sit back in the rustic Sweet Bones café for the best vegan treats with plenty of gluten free options. Order a flat-white with house made cashew milk to go with a creamy delicious cinnabun, topped with a vegan cream cheese. Open daily until three, this will be your new favourite spot for some warmth and plant-based goodness.
Pastel De Nata at Rebel Rebel (NewActon)

Escape the rainy winter, there is plenty of space inside Rebel Rebel. This all-day dining venue has you covered from early morning treats to a late night-cap.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the sexy atmosphere while selecting one of the many glossy treats sprawled along the counter. We recommend grabbing a Pastel De Nata, the bursting Portuguese egg custard tart with a coffee and a book.
Enjoy while watching the winter drizzle outside the beautiful wood-panelled windows.
