Where to find some of Canberra’s best gluten-free brunch options

Posted on

Heading out to breakfast or brunch in Canberra is a foodie’s delight, and gone are the days of boring gluten-free food options.

With sweet treats and savoury delights on the menu (yes, including smashed avo), we found 10 cafés with yummy breakfast options that’ll make your heart—rather than your stomach—swell.

Common Grounds Gowrie

Always busy on weekends, Common Grounds Gowrie is known for its good food and coffee. With an extensive menu that can cater to coeliacs, you can’t go past the Colombian hash (with chili pork sausage and potato hash with jalapeños, avocado, green onions, coriander, corn, lime and fried egg), or the brekkie bruschetta (with smashed avocado, house basil pesto, olive oil, cherry tomatoes, feta and side of Egyptian dukkah served on Sonoma sourdough toast with two poached eggs and a drizzle of sweet balsamic reduction)…Yum.

Tucked away in Fyshwick, Cup & Coaster has a few gluten-free options on the menu that go beyond a bacon and egg roll. The Buddha Plate (with baked pumpkin, roasted turmeric cauliflower, quinoa mixed salad, cherry tomato, avocado, and poached egg) is a must-try but their gluten-free carrot cake will have you going back for seconds…and thirds. Who said dessert can’t come after breakfast?

Unit 2/64 Wollongong Street, Fyshwick | Open Monday to Friday 7 am – 2 pm and Saturday to Sunday 8 am – 2 pm | @cupandcoaster

East Row Speciality Coffee

If you love avo on toast, you know an essential part of what makes it good is well…the toast. And I’m not exaggerating when I say the gluten-free bread at East Row Speciality Coffee is absolutely amazing. Light and crunchy (and decently sized), it’s also the perfect alternative for their benedict and eggs on toast menu options.

The best part of eighty/twenty (apart from their coffee and cacao smoothie) is that almost everything on their brunch menu can be made gluten-free. Offering both savoury and sweet optionslike the iconic vegan buckwheat waffle with date sauce, waffle crumble, seasonal fruits and your choice of vegan salted caramel or boysenberry cheesecake ice creamwhat’s not to love?

If you head to ‘old’ Kingston for a cheeky brunch, a must-stop is Penny University Roasters. Always busy and with a fresh and innovative menu, their gluten-free options include the delicious dill-coated poached eggs with asparagus and a middle eastern Basturma as well other weekly specials…like hotcakes! Do I need to say more?

Sweet Bones Bakery and Café

I’m sorry, did you say gluten-free pancake specials, sweet treats and a brekkie burger with tofu scramble, hummus, ketchup, coconut back, tabasco and more? Shut up and take my money. It’s no wonder this small café is always buzzing.

With a separate fryer dedicated to all things gluten-free, and an amazing menu (recommended by coeliac foodie queen Grace Minehan from Against the Grain), Teddy Pickers is another café to add to your brunch bucket list. We recommend the brekkie roll or Teddy’s French toast. Your stomach will thank you.

The Knox Made in Watson

A local hub for family and friends, The Knox is passionate about great food and has lots of gluten-free options. Think all the classics, like eggs benny, and add in a few fun options like Mexican eggs and the funguy—local mushrooms, cashew cream and puffed wild rice on gluten-free bread.
