How TikTok has climbed the female empowerment ladder

Posted on

TikTok has found its way into almost everyone’s life whether you like it or not—and there’s no denying that this social media platform has excelled in providing some laughter and escapism from reality.

Whether you’re active on the platform, getting sent videos in group chats, or merely just hearing about the latest trends of funky dances, it’s here, and looking like it’s going to stay for a while.

We’ve seen many young child protégées turn to the platform as a career. Making figures in a week that some of us only dream of making in a year, it seems like throwing your arms in the air or filming your funniest home videos are what really get the likes up and the dollars rolling.

But it’s not only the young taking over the world with their hip bumping and thrusting dance moves—females of all ages are also climbing the ladder.

TikTok has created an abundant feeling of belonging and encouragement among its users. When it comes to the empowerment and uplifting of females, the vulnerability that may be felt when keeping up with societies unrealistic standards are completely flipped and forgotten. Users of the platform promote that being you is empowering and it constructs a wave of love, providing a great example of what social media platforms should be about.

Looking at Instagram, we can see how polished, perfect, and pretty it may seem on the outside, but when looking at someone’s 15-second reel, or aesthetic feed, ask yourself, what do they really have to put in, to adhere to the societal conflicts or perfectionism? Is it worth the time and energy to doll yourself up for a quick pic to be judged by those who see it?

In a world where your socials are your identity and a digital business card, it can be hard to ensure it’s perfect in every aspect. From the number of followers to following ratio, likes, whose visited your page, or who’s skipping to the next story, it’s starting to become irrelevant with TikTok entering the hierarchy.

Leading social media personality and content creator Bree Lenehan has identified the gap in the market, relating content for younger women who feel the societal pressure to adhere to a certain look on our feeds. Bree has utilised her TikTok audience and translated her self-love and empowering messages onto her Instagram following.

Understanding and utilising the idea that this TikTok movement needs to also be heard on Instagram, it contrasts the constant feeds of women and perfectionism.

It seems that we put so much time and energy into creating quality content that may only get a few views, let alone a peep into the trending personalities and algorithms.

TikTok has had a great breakthrough, when aligning with female empowerment and uplifting the beauty in imperfections and the struggles with societal pressure of looking a certain way all the time.

It’s a platform where stuffing up is celebrated and being unique and quirky is “#cool.” It’s almost like a breath of fresh air hitting your face—much like the frosty Canberra mornings—that we can stop sweating over the little things, and just say “stuff it!”
