The humble ponytail is featuring heavily on the runways of Paris, London and New York, meaning hair will be about convenient glamour this season (woo hoo!)

How can you get the perfect pony? One that looks sleek and ‘done’ rather than something that’s been pulled back in two seconds flat and less-than-glamorous.

Jacky Quon, Senior Stylist from Kundalini, tells you how to get a tail to rival the most elegant equine!

snag free, cotton elastic
tail comb
bobby pins
hair spray
Smoothing creme
hair dryer
straightener or tongs

what to do

Step 1.

The pony tail will only be as good as the hair you have to start with! Whether you want your pony tail straight and slick or wavy and bouncy, always use a heat protectant and a product to manage frizz such as Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Style Prep.

Blowdry your hair in the direction it’s going to sit, using a comb not a brush – we dont want any volume. This means directing the hair on the side upwards, the front backwards, and the back frontwards. The more effort you put in here, the easier it will be to look more runway then school-yard!

Step 2.

Using a snag free cotton elastic, tie your hair in a pony tail at the flattest spot of your crown, trying to move your hands as little as possible.

Step 3.

Now here’s the trick to the perfect pony! Once you’ve secured your hair band, place the metal end of a tail comb under the very top layer of hair at your hairline and drag backwards toward the band. This disguises any bumbs with a veil of hair for a smooth surface.

Do this all around the pony tail and spray with hair spray, such as Aveda’s Air Control light Hold Spray, as you go. You can do this as many times as you like until all the hair appears sleek and shiny!

Step 4.

Gather a small section of hair from underneath the ponytail, approximately 2cm wide, and wrap around the cotton band to disguise. Secure with a bobby pin underneath.

Step 5.

Here is where you can have some fun! Straighten, curl, tease, crimp, braid and pin the hair to create your final look! Just remember to finish with hair spray and a smoothing cream like Aveda’s Light Elements Smoothing Fluid for any fly-aways!
