10 things that happen when you get fit

Posted on

Getting fit and healthy is a beautiful thing, but it doesn’t come without its ups and downs.

Let’s take a look at the good, the bad and the downright painful.

#1 You’ll do more laundry than you ever thought possible.

Lots of exercise means lots of sweat, and lots of sweat means lots of laundry. Sports bras, tights, underwear, tops, shorts and socks… oh the socks.

#2 You acquire an endless supply of containers

… and protein shakers. And drink bottles. Preparing your healthy meals means the top drawer of your dishwasher will closely resemble a Tupperware catalogue.

Unless you have a penchant for foul smells, don’t even contemplate leaving a protein shaker unwashed for longer than a few hours, especially not in the car. In fact, you’d be better off just binning it (and the car).

#3 You’ll sleep like nobody’s business

I never thought much of naps until I started exercising in the early mornings. A post workout nap is the stuff dreams are made of.

#4 You’ll discover your derp face

What’s a derp face? You, my friend, are about to find out.

One day you’ll be lifting a really heave weight and catch your barely recognisable face in the mirror. That heinous expression? That’s your derp face.

Live it. Love it. Embrace the derp.

#5 You’ll gain an insatiable addiction to #activewear

… And you’ll never want to take it off. Heading to the shops? Active wear. Going to grab sushi? Active wear. Brunch with the girls? You know it – active wear.

As our friends Lulu and Lorna will tell you, there ain’t no reward like new gym gear. Treat yourself!

#6 You’ll lose your boobs

If you’re an active lady who’s managed to preserve the size of her breasts, then I beg you to share your goddess secrets with us mortals.

Let’s hope that someone figures out a way for food to go to your boobs.

In the mean time, celebrate the silver linings: you can sleep on your stomach, wear one sports bra instead of two, and downward dog without smothering yourself.

#7 You won’t shut up about your workouts.

You can’t help it! You might be able to suppress the urge in front of your colleagues and the general public, but find yourself an active friend and all you can talk about is PBs, KMs and WODs.

Haters gonna hate

#8 You’ll understand the pain of #legday

DOMS stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, also known as hell. That ‘hurts so good’ feeling is a fabulous reminder of all your hard work, but you’ll be feeling it when you have to tackle the stairs, sit down on a toilet or basically move in any way at all.

#9 You’ll have a huge appetite

… especially if you’re doing lots of cardio like running and swimming. The good news is that after all your hard work you’re more likely to want to scoff chicken and veggies than burgers and fries.

#10 You’ll be the happiest version of yourself

Between the endorphins, the increased self esteem and the personal satisfaction of reaching fitness goals, you’ll be loving life and more importantly yourself.
