A float above the rest

Posted on

With a 24/7 work cycle and technology that never switches off, it’s no surprise we are constantly searching for new ways to relax.

One of the latest–and most popular–additions are float tanks, a pleasurable out-of-body experience which involves floating in a soundproof tank filled with warm salt water matched to your body temperature.

The holistic pastime is rapidly drawing new converts who credit the practice for helping alleviate depression, anxiety, chronic pain and injuries, jet lag and muscle tension, as well as improving mental focus, immune health and creativity.

Canberra’s own purpose-built float tank centre, Float Above in Phillip, has a growing client list including athletes, tradespeople, yoga teachers and busy office workers.

General Manager Lance Prior says it takes about three 60 minute sessions to see the real effects of the tanks, which include a spacious interior roughly the size of a queen bed, specialised Epsom salts, soothing music and cycling chakra colours controlled by a button inside the pod.

“The ultra-deep relaxation resets the body’s hormonal and metabolic balance accelerating recovery from stress, illness or injury,” Lance says.

“With no commands needing to be sent out, the logical side of the brain is rendered redundant, and its activity slows down allowing the creative side to flourish. This leaves the individual in a dream-like state, akin to the moments experienced just before you fall asleep. In this state, the brain releases vast amounts of endorphins and dopamine.”

For those new to the practice, Lance describes the experience as similar to laying on a li-lo in a swimming pool.

“However on a li-lo the body is out of the water and on top – in a float you are partially in the water, fully suspended and supported,” he says.

Before each float, clients will shower before stepping into the pod to ensure no makeup, natural body oils, lotions or product contaminate the pod water. After a 60 minute float, they’ll shower again and once dressed, will have full access to Float Above’s relaxation lounge where they can slowly come back to reality, have a cup of Adore Tea and read a book. There is also the option to include a massage after a float; for the ultimate relaxing experience.

While falling asleep in the pods is quite common, most people don’t even notice while it’s happening,” says Lance.

“Most people don’t realise that they do sleep; a small number remain awake, however, and before each float staff do explain the best way to relax and get the most from the experience.”

Pod lids can be left open for those feeling claustrophobic, however, Lance says most people are surprised at how spacious the pods actually are.

Most new clients quickly become converts, with many describing improved immune systems, better sleep and lower levels of anxiety.

“Some of our most common feedback usually ranges from ‘it was a wonderful experience’ to ‘when can I book again?’. However, what is noticeable is the gifting of floats by daughters to their mums,” Lance says.

“Their mums will come in, with a degree of uncertainty, but are enthusiastic on departure. What this says to us is that family members value our service to entrust to their parents. This is a very welcome occurrence and shows the adding of value in terms of family support and care.”
