DC Fit is here to shake up your workout

Posted on

We’ll admit, the words ‘workout’ and ‘fun’ are not usually used in the same sentence, but DC Fit classes are not your average workout.

With options like Bounce, Hip Hop-ercise and Barre Body, the new range of classes from Dance Central aims to shake up your fitness routine. (Sometimes literally). Dance Central has been running adult dance classes for 12 years, and founder Julie Scheer has seen a huge growth in their popularity over that time.

“First, we launched Barre Body, around eight years ago. We saw it was starting to trend, because everyone wants a dancer’s body! But it’s really about making that workout enjoyable and just giving everybody that lovely endorphin rush each time they come here and feeling good about themselves.”

But that doesn’t mean you won’t be breaking a sweat.

“As part of DC Fit there are classes that really work on cardio fitness and the aerobic threshold and also classes that are working on strengthening and toning muscles,” Julie explains.

“If our clients want to do their strength training and cardio fitness here, these classes have got something for everyone.”

The new classes are an extension of Julie’s philosophy of bringing fun and fitness together. And she knows it works, because she does it herself.

“I always think about what I want to get out of my fitness routine. For me, a holistic approach is really important, because I’m just like any other adult. I’ve had two children. I’ve really struggled with losing the weight and trying to get that pre-baby body back.

“It didn’t make it any easier that I had my own dance studio, so there’s got to be something different.”

That “something different” is the welcoming community at the heart of Dance Central.

“I created DC Fit because I really want women to feel supported on their journey. It’s got to start right from the beginning. You can feel really lonely and isolated on your own fitness journey, and it doesn’t need to be that way. Judging by the interest we already have in our dance fitness classes, there are so many women out there who want to be able to do this.

“There are classes here at the beginner level and where people can feel comfortable going, ‘Okay. Great. I don’t need to be doing any pirouettes or dancing next to a  girl who’s been dancing her whole entire life.'”

All the choreography has been created by Dance Central’s experienced instructors specifically for the new classes. Hip Hop-ercise, for example, designed by DC Fit ambassador Thea Kabadanis, uses basic hip-hop moves that the average person can actually do to work up a sweat. Then, if you’re up for a challenge, Bounce is a dance cardio class using a mini trampoline.

These classes are the newest addition to an adult dance and fitness class roster that already includes Barre Body, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Funk Tap, Heels, Jazz Funk, Ballet and “Ass Class”. Yep, a class that’s all about your booty.

In with Julie’s emphasis on a holistic approach to wellness, experts will be brought in to teach workshops based on nutrition, well-being and health, as well as hosting social nights to bring the community together.

As Julie explains, “At Dance Central we want to have a personal connection with our customers. I really feel like I just want to help people to have the best, active life they can.”
