33 Revolutions: an Enlightened music experience

Posted on

Look beyond the illuminations and noodle markets to discover 33 Revolutions—your chance to be part of an exciting and collaborative artwork inspired by the transformative power of music.

Each year during the Enlighten festival, the sprawling front façade of MoAD (Museum of Australian Democracy) at Old Parliament House becomes a canvas for vivid imagery reflecting the themes of the institution.

But, as has become tradition, it’s what’s happening inside the iconic building that’s the real eye-opener. MoAD is opening its doors and inviting visitors to help them create an immersive installation that allows them to creatively express themselves and explore different aspects of democracy at the same time.

And this year, MoAD’s Enlighten installation is bigger, better, bolder than ever—and alive with song.

MoAD Director, Daryl Karp says “Music is collective and communal, binding people together. From protest and propaganda to resistance and national unity, over the centuries music has changed attitudes and influenced political change.”

Join the revolution

With 33 Revolutions MoAD invites visitors to decorate recycled vinyl records with lyrics and symbols, based on an issue or movement they are passionate about.

This is a chance to be part of something big—literally. Over two weekends the installation will be growing and evolving as thousands of visitors contribute their own uniquely decorated vinyl records to those hanging above King’s Hall.

There are 5,000 recycled vinyl records ready to be used and MoAD is expecting each and every one to become part of this inspiring community built artwork.

At the same time a rocking 33 Revolutions soundtrack will be entertaining visitors, with artists including The Presets, Paul Kelly, Aretha Franklin and everything in between. Having voices from different generations, cultures and identities shows the universal power of music.

“At its best music moves people, conveying political ideas, inspiring political action, and captures a spirit of the time,” explains Daryl.

Spotify, selfies and more

33 Revolutions is a visual and aural celebration, and music is at its heart. Visitors can browse a classic record store at the edge of the installation, and the rocking soundtrack playing each night includes some of the best songs of change from the last 50 years.

MoAD has also created Spotify playlists to play each night and inspire visitors with themes like People Power, Fix the System, Love Not War, Mother Nature, Equality for All and Celebrate Diversity.

Visitors’ immersion experiences even include the online space, as for the first time ever MoAD is setting up a selfie space so visitors can film fun 15 second videos of themselves lip-syncing and dancing to their favourite song using social media platform TikTok.

The fun extends to the #sleeveface social media phenomenon, where people use famous vinyl record covers to obscure part of their face and create a fun photo illusion.

Whether you love art, music, performance or just having fun on Instagram, there is something for everyone whether they are five or 105. As is appropriate for a museum that explores the concept of democracy, everyone will have a chance to make their voice heard.
