Hotel Kurrajong’s Double Sapphire Celebration
Posted on
DOUBLE THE SAPPHIRE, IT’S TIME FOR A 1920s THEMED PARTY.
The hotel that housed Canberra’s first parliamentarians at the dawn of our nation, the hotel that may or may not house Benjamin “Ben” Chifley’s ghost, Hotel Kurrajong Canberra, celebrates its 90th birthday this year with a series of celebrations, starting with a glamorous 1920s Double Sapphire dinner dance this Saturday 23 July.
Stepping into the Heritage-listed hotel is a trip back in time, with Art Deco decor throughout the hotel: the grand ballroom, cosy fireplace, library stocked with historic literature and photographs along the hallways all imbue a sense of the building’s history.
“The Sapphire signifies a 45-year-anniversary, so Hotel Kurrajong’s 90th birthday will double the jewels and glamour and be an opportunity to revisit the hotels 1926 origins but with contemporary service and style,” says General Manager Emma Waterman.
“There’ll be performances by talented flapper dancers and music from the era so you can dance the night away and we’d love guests to embrace the era in their choice of dress for the night.”
If the chance to win a weekend away wasn’t enough incentive to attend the dinner, the three-course menu will feature locally sourced seasonal produce with drinks and entertainment.
And if you’d like to retire upstairs after the party like a true Gatsby guest, you can stay in one of Hotel Kurrajong’s classic rooms for the night of the event (or the night before…or both), including a cocktail or champagne upon arrival, a two-for-one breakfast and a 12pm late checkout for $190 per night*.
What to wear to a Gatsby themed party?

The 1920s was the era of flappers, favouring outfits that maximised movement when dancing and luxurious accessories that caught the eye.
But there’s no need to buy a new wardrobe – pull out all those pearl necklaces, chandelier earrings and long gloves you’ve been keeping hidden away!
Start with either a drop waisted dress, plain black dress or go all out and indulge in a fringe dress if you don’t already have one.
Now we can really have some fun – layer up the dress with pearls, earrings, long gloves, faux furs, feathers, headpieces and any kind of embellishment you can find. In this situation the more the better and don’t forget to just have some fun with it.
Finish off your look with a pair of Mary Jane’s or black heels and you’ve got yourself the perfect outfit for a night of dancing and frolicking.
To beat the winter chill, add a fringed shawl, faux fur wrap or box coat to keep you warm before the dancing.
