One Day Perimeter Book Shop and ‘Second Sight’ at Nishi Gallery.

Posted on

On Saturday 1 December, Nishi Gallery is holding its annual One Day Perimeter Book Shop.

The One Day Shop launches Second Sight: an exhibition and book by Melbourne photographer Sarah Walker; winner of the inaugural 2018 Perimeter Small Book Prize.

As always, the Perimeter One Day Shop will be stocked with key titles from Perimeter’s Melbourne bookshop and distributor’s stable of European, US and Australian publishers.

Sarah Walker, Summon (Hands)

With new books from MACK (London), Spector Books (Leipzig), Editions Patrick Frey (Zurich), Libraryman (Paris/Stockholm), Nieves (Zurich), Architectural Association (London), The Ice Plant (Los Angeles), TBW (Oakland), Onomatopee (Eindhoven), Roma Publications (Amsterdam), Fw: Books (Amsterdam) and Valiz (Amsterdam), The One Day Shop is just in time for the fat man in the red suit.

Sarah Walker, Ring of Fire

Perimeter’s Dan Rule and Sarah Walker will also host a talk at 2 pm on the day to discuss the process of translating a collection of photos into an art book.

“Photography itself is ritualistic and performative, and at times requires repetitive action to achieve its intended results,” writes Sarah of her process. “It has a creator.”

Sarah’s book, Second Sight takes its bearings from the adage that “seeing is believing”. With it, she looks at our collective relationship with spirituality, faith, ritual and the search for meaning.

Sarah Walker, Gesture (Green Hands)

Using the trickery that photography can provide, she takes snippets of the every day; reframing them and imbibing them with the ephemeral and the arcane. Hovering hands, chalk markings, rocks, dust and abstracted portraiture: Sarah deconstructs the mundane in her fraught search for meaning. Each and every instance becomes a potential sign.
