So Fine: Contemporary women artists make Australian history

Credit: The Girls, Zoe Davis and Linde Ivimey, 2018 by Linde Ivimey. Steel armatures, acrylic resin, cast and natural human, sheep turkey, fox, chicken and snake bones, earth, paper, natural fibre, dyed cotton, dyed and sewn viscera. Courtesy of Linde Ivimey.
As conceptually thrilling as it is aesthetically rich, So Fine features new works from ten women artists reinterpreting and reimagining elements of Australian history.
Forming part of the Portrait Gallery’s twentieth birthday celebrations, the exhibition enriches the contemporary narrative around Australia’s history and biography, reflecting the tradition of storytelling in our country.
So Fine’s contributing artists – of various ages and backgrounds, and hailing from different parts of Australia – have all created new works for the exhibition. Aside from gender, their common attributes are a meticulous approach to creation, driven by considered, nuanced thinking. Their works are intricate, refined and affecting objects that reconceive events, people and places from Australia’s past.
The artists involved are Shirley Purdie, Linde Ivimey, Bern Emmerichs, Leah King-Smith, Nusra Latif Qureshi, Nicola Dickson, Pamela See (Xue Mei-Ling), Fiona McMonagle, Valerie Kirk and Carol McGregor. Charged with these makers’ passionate, intensely individual takes, and incorporating themes from pre-history to the present, So Fine challenges and delights, as well as interrogating the boundaries of contemporary portraiture.
Showing until Monday 1 October at the National Portrait Gallery. See the website for more information.
EXHIBITION: GREYBILLY

Credit: Abigail Varney.
Named after the grey, green and cream opal found in the South Australian mining town of Coober Pedy, Greybilly brings together work by Abigail Varney (Melbourne) and Nina Baker (Sydney).
Photographs by Varney present a vivid perspective on depleting resources in Coober Pedy. Conceptual jewellery by Baker sees the transformation of disposable plastic containers into objects of beauty. Curated by Yasmin Masri, Greybilly explores the search for, and creation of, what’s precious; and the reality of finite resources.
Cost: Free
Happening 3 August – 29 September at the Nishi Gallery, 17 Kendall Lane, NewActon.

MODEL CITIZENS CIRCUS OZ
The always innovative Circus Oz returns with the first production for the company by new artistic director Rob Tannion, exploring what it means to be a ‘model citizen’ in Australia today through awesome physicality, biting satire and highly skilled, unpredictable acrobatics.
With an impressive cast of mesmerising aerialists, cheeky characters, daredevil acrobats, cigar box juggling, hula hooping and backyard banter, Model Citizens subverts the suburban dream.
Set inside a model kit world complete with giant scissors and cotton reels, peg springboards and hammock-sized undies on the line, the performers swing from knife-dodging to acrobat-tossing, contorting through huge steaming irons to tumbling off a house of giant credit cards.
With a brand new ensemble of performers, a thumping live band and set design that challenges scale and perspective, the latest Circus Oz show brings a fresh sophistication to the troupe’s larrikin personality, delivering exhilarating family-friendly feats with poise and charm.
Happening Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 August from 7.30pm-9.30pm at Canberra Theatre Centre, London Circuit.
See the website for more information.
CALAMITY JANE
This whip-cracking, rollicking, rough-and-ready reimagining shucks off the buckskin and brings a barrelful of dirt and grit to the classic musical. Starring Virginia Gay (Channel 7’s All Saints and Winners & Losers) as the magnetic, masculine heroine, joined by a ragtag band of acclaimed comedic actors and musicians who share all the other roles.
Featuring timeless standards such as ‘The Deadwood Stage’, ‘Just Blew in From the Windy City’, ‘Black Hills of Dakota’, and ‘Secret Love’ performed with piano and a grab bag of other instruments, this production injects a unique and raucous sense of spontaneity into the world of musical theatre.
Become immersed in the world of the Golden Garter Saloon – alive with whores, gamblers, and habitual jeopardy – and expect an unruly and unpredictable ride. In particular dozens of audience members seated onstage at saloon tables will be a part of the action when they least expect it!
Happening Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 August at Canberra Theatre Centre, London Circuit, Australian Capital Territory, Australia.
See the website for more information.
