Top 3 Places in Canberra To Take Visiting Kids

Posted on

Canberra would have to be one of the best places in Australia to raise a family.

But if you’ve got friends visiting with kids for the Christmas holidays and they want to get straight to the most fun spots in town where do you begin?

The kids won’t last too long at Parliament House so what’s in it for them? Below are my top three places that will not only keep the kids entertained but will be enjoyable for mum and dad too.

Questacon

This was my favourite place ever in Canberra when I was younger. So awesome for kids! It is the National Science and Technology Centre and seriously, this place makes science fun. It has over 200 hands-on interactive science exhibits and a special little area designed just for 0-6 year olds. This place is as enjoyable for parents as it is for the kids. I would go so far as to say it is a “must see”!

Cost is really reasonable with adults at only $23 each, kids over 4 at $17.50 each and kids under 4 for FREE! There is also a family option for 2 adults and 3 kids (over 4) at only $80. Additional kids if you have a Toyota Tarago sized family are a steal at only $8 each. Car parking next to the Centre is also FREE. Weeee!

If you’re playing tour guide for a few days or more you could consider the 3 in Fun ticket which will give you entrance to Questacon, Cockington Green Gardens and the Australian Institute of Sport. You can also revisit your favourite of three again for free! These tickets can be purchased from the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre so it is worth seeking it out first if you think this is up your alley. Go there anyway as they will have maps for you which are handy if you are in unfamiliar territory.

Take a family bike ride

Canberra is mostly as flat as tack and nicely planned so it has a lovely bike path for you right around the beautiful Lake Burley Griffin. Mr Spokes Bike Hire is a great choice as they have all sorts of kid friendly biking options available and do a great family rate.

If you have visitors here these Summer hols, then they are open every day except Tuesday (why, I don’t know). If you’re entertaining during the winter months when it is rather chilly then you will need to check their website for details. They still operate four days per week and every day during school holidays so I am sure there will be an option to suit your needs.

The Giant Mushroom

The Giant Mushroom is located at the Belconnen Fresh Food Markets. Not a place you might immediately think is interesting for kids. The good folk at the Markets take kids and in particular keeping them fit and healthy and strong very seriously though so you should consider checking it out.

Their website is amazing. It has a dedicated area especially for kids with activities, recipes and loads of other information. The Giant Mushroom is located onsite and is a perfect play area for children while mum and dad take a break. I highly recommend you checking this place out.

Where will you be taking your visitors these Christmas holidays?

Yep, we’re taking visitors to Questacon and doing the Mr Spokes thing too. We also thought we’d have lunch and a walk at the Botanical Gardens – their cafe is pretty kid-friendly. Had not heard of the Giant Mushroom, we’ll check that out.

Have to watch out for 3 hour limit on Questacon parking…. Also add into the list the National Museum of Australia and the kids’ section of the War Memorial. Both are free with free parking and excellent for kids – those two and Questacon would be my family’s favourites, closely followed by the National Zoo & Aquarium.

@Alison – let me know what you think about the Giant Mushroom and the general atmosphere there.

@Tiffany – Great tip on the Questacon parking limitation, I had forgotten about that! Thanks for pointing that out. Yes I do love the National Museum of Australia too but I still find it hard to get any kids excited about the War Memorial.
