Designed not decorated: George Kóródy’s modernist furniture
The modernist furniture of George Kóródy (1890-1957) is unique in Australia.
The experienced Hungarian architect, teacher and designer arrived in Sydney in 1940 bringing both a Central European modernist aesthetic and a commitment to produce simple pieces suitable for the Australian climate. Kóródy became lead designer for Artes Studios in 1947, where he produced a remarkable range of furniture for private clients and the popular market that were regularly featured in magazines of the period.
Although Artes Studios remained prominent for three decades, due to Kóródy’s untimely death in 1957, his contribution was largely forgotten.
This exhibition of highly collectable, privately-owned furniture, dating from 1947 until the mid-1950s celebrates Kóródy’s significant contribution to Australian modernism.
Showing 6-30 September at Nishi Gallery, 17 Kendall Ln, Canberra. Opening: Friday 6 September from 6 – 8 pm.
Normal opening hours: Wednesday – Saturday from 11 – 6.30 pm.

The Irresistible
A reckless, intoxicating love letter to the subconscious, The Irresistible is an exploration of the invisible and insidious nature of unconscious bias, told through multiple parallel narratives that intersect through mystery and sci-fi.
Locations and time bleed into one another with dream-like fluidity as performers transition from one character to the next at breakneck speed.
Strange lights in the sky, black ooze, a smoke-filled box and a child with otherworldly powers–the mysterious and unexplained permeates every moment of The Irresistible and will throw you off guard and leave the fringes of your mind resonating with a feeling that is just out of reach.
2018 Helpmann Award Nominee for Best Play, The Irresistible is intoxicatingly creepy, reminiscent of Stranger Things and Twin Peaks.
This bold and original new work is the exceptional first collaboration between Side Pony Productions (The Confidence Man, The Pride) and The Last Great Hunt (Falling through Clouds, The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer).
Happening 20-21 September at Canberra Theatre Centre.
See the canberratheatrecentre.com.au for more information.
Champagne and Cinema: Private screening of “Margaret Atwood Live”
The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, will be revealed in this global cinematic event.
The Handmaid’s Tale has come to represent a powerful symbol against misogyny and oppression and the evening will reflect on the real-world events that inspired the original story and the alarming political climate which has, in part, inspired this sequel.
A number of remarkable actors will read from The Testaments, allowing audiences to be the first to discover the new book.
Exclusive documentary content with rare archive will open a window on to Atwood’s rich and varied career.
The film captures an evening of conversation and performance, filmed live from the stage of the National Theatre, with privileged access to this iconic author.
Happening Thursday 19 September from 6-9 pm at Dendy Cinemas, Canberra Centre.
See Eventbrite for more information.

The Woman in the Window: love in the time of Big Brother
A riveting production celebrating strengths across the centuries of poetry and women
Experience the times of real-life poet Anna Akhmatova (1884-1966), with a futuristic twist.
Canberra REP presents Alma de Groen’s powerful play on the Stage at the Canberra REP Theatre (Theatre 3) in Acton, performing from 5 – 21 September.
From the dramatic opening scene of this striking and compelling play, to Anna Akhmatova’s heartfelt poetic call to her Muse at the end, we are head up, tensed, hearts stopping.
In Stalin’s Russia, the internationally famous poet Anna Akhmatova is forbidden to write. Too famous to murder in the gulag like millions of others, she must appear in her window twice a day to satisfy the secret police that she is still obeying house arrest.
In a future cold world, a young woman, Rachel Sekerov, searches for what is missing in her life and the sterile world she inhabits, where literature, science and even Shakespeare have virtually sunk without trace, where a ‘poet’ is a man who researches poetry in the archives, where there is no nature or wildlife or moon or stars.
Stalin’s thugs are threatening to ‘disappear’ poets and poetry, and Rachel’s superiors have declared poetry ‘economically unviable; poets and poetry are threatened with permanent de-listing.
Across the centuries, Anna and Rachel have a mysterious spiritual connection which the play reveals in a wonderful way.
Tickets: Full $45, Concession $38, Preview $35, Under 30s $20 (door sales only).
Preview session: 5 September at 8 pm
Happening 6-21 September from Wednesday to Saturday at 8 pm with matinees at 14, 15 & 21 September, 2 pm at the Canberra REP Theatre, (Theatre 3), 3 Repertory Lane, Acton.
See the website more information.
Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms
Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms is a Shepparton Art Museum curated exhibition, touring nationally by NETS Victoria.
It presents the work of 17 contemporary Australian artists who utilise craft-based materials and techniques with political intent. The artists in this exhibition subvert and extend craft forms as vehicles of activism and social change, exploring the ideas and issues of our time.
Some works encourage social connection and participation in collective processes, others respond to artistic or political movements and yet others reveal that the personal remains political.
Drawing on a long historical lineage, Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms challenges us to see craft in a new light, inviting us to reflect on social participation and political change.
Don’t miss this provocative exhibition, visiting Canberra for the only time.
Happening 6 September – 2 February at the Museum of Australia Democracy, 18 King George Terrace, Parkes.
See moadoph.gov.au/exhibitions/craftivism for more information.

EMERSON STRING QUARTET
Perhaps the most celebrated string quartet ever to emerge from the USA, the Emerson String Quartet is making its first Australian tour in over 19 years. Founded in 1976 and with only one personnel change in all that time, the ensemble has stacked up more than 30 recordings and countless awards. With such a pedigree, it is no surprise that the Emersons play with masterly warmth and ease: a spontaneous confidence and joy.
Naturally enough, a master string quartet has chosen to play two programs of great masterpieces. Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven were writing with their audience very much in mind, and their quartets are full of attention-grabbing highlights and dreamy slow movements, while the vitality of folk music shapes the quartets of Dvořák and Bartók.
Shostakovich’s Fifth Quartet did not appear until after the death of Stalin, when its icy, wintry darkness could at last be safely brought into the light.
Happening Monday 16 September from 7 – 9 pm at Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music, Acton.

Happy and Glorious
The Queen’s Visit in 1954. The phrase conjures up memories of a young Queen in summer dresses and ball gowns, crowds of Australians excitedly waving flags and charming tableaus spelling out heartfelt messages.
Old Parliament House was central to the royal tour while the Queen was in Canberra. The Queen alighted from the Daimler and walked up the front steps in her coronation gown to rousing cheers. She was escorted through King’s Hall by a very proud Prime Minister Menzies to attend the State Banquet. In her most formal duty, the Queen opened the 20th Parliament in the Senate Chamber. A room in the President of the Senate’s suite was redecorated and furnished for her private use while she was in the house.

It also engages parents and their kids in activities which develop skills such as running, kicking, balancing, throwing and catching. Their focus is to make movement fun and help parents to bank more active time into their day.
Join one of their free weekly sessions which run on Monday – Thursday from 10 am during the school term. Full details for locations can be found on Facebook.
Meet & Move is a program of the Bluearth Foundation, working in partnership with Mums Exercise Group Australia (MEGA) Canberra and supported by ACT Government under the ACT Health Promotion Grants Program. It has been created to help mums with young kids to be more active together, get outdoors and connect with other mums.

Showing until 30 September at Nishi Gallery, 17 Kendall Ln, Canberra. Opening: Friday 6 September from 6 – 8 pm.

ANNIKA ROMEYN – ENDURANCE
In her solo exhibition, Endurance, Romeyn draws inspiration from the personally significant site of Guerilla Bay, Yuin Country: a beautiful place that will always be intertwined with memories of Summer 2016/17, the last shared with her Mum.
Around that time she encountered Rebecca Solnit’s thoughts on ‘the blue of distance’ (the blue at the horizon, which we can never quite reach). In the process of revisiting and reimagining such a powerful site from the physical and temporal distance of her studio, blue suggested an appropriate sense of memory and the beyond.

Tom Buckland: Apollo Lunar Module (1:2 Scale) 2019
Fifty years ago, landing on the moon required a vehicle not designed for this world, so the Apollo Lunar Module was born.
One of the most improbable flying machines ever conceived, artist Tom Buckland has been fuelled by a fascination with crewed spaceflight and the lunar module was quite an obsession. On the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing, Buckland has used blueprints, official photographs and several model kits as reference, to construct his own half-scale replica of the Eagle Lunar Module. The ephemeral materials he has used are a reminder of how fragile the original craft now seems.
Developed for the exhibition Promised the Moon at School of Art Gallery ANU, the work now takes its second flight to Civic Square.
Showing at Canberra Museum and Gallery until 19 October. Find out more at cmag.com.au.

onetoeight: Australia’s first prime ministers
Visually arresting, humorous and thoughtful, Canberra-based artist Alison Alder reinterprets and reinvigorates portraits of the first eight prime ministers in onetoeight, a contemporary art exhibition. Developed from Alder’s fellowship with the Australian Prime Ministers Centre and motivated by the early period of our nation’s democracy, onetoeight brings these important historical figures a little bit closer to us.
Inspired by a picture of Stanley Bruce’s cabinet where they were all wearing a lapel badge, Alder presents each prime minister wearing at least one badge to reference a key aspect of their time in office. Neither explicitly positive or negative, we are left to form our own opinion.
Through the portraits, intense patterned wallpaper honouring the prime minister’s wives and a Term-O-Meter animation tracking the changing political hues of individuals and governments, Alder gives us a sense of our nation’s history that is lively, dynamic and parallels the present day.

BEHIND THE LINES 2018
Venture down the rabbit-hole for Behind the Lines: The Year’s Best Political Cartoons 2018, with this year’s theme Curiouser and Curiouser inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Kids of all ages can visit the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland at MoAD for dress ups, games and adventures.
Step through the Looking Glass and dress up as the colourful and curious characters of Wonderland including Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat or the Mad Hatter.
There is also a wall of crazy mirrors that will stretch or shrink you and games with a special Wonderland twist that will delight the whole family.
Older kids can go on a cartooning trail through the exhibition, following clues and learning about the art of political cartooning.
While the children are entertained in Wonderland, parents can grin, smirk and grimace at the cartoons that explore the unexpected twists and turns of politics in 2018.
