10 events not to miss at Canberra Beer Week

Posted on

Here are the best ways to get beer-ducated during Canberra Beer Week.

Canberra Beer Week is almost upon us, launching officially next Thursday 5 November.

This is the time of the year when your otherwise food-uninterested partners might actually prefer a five course meal to a pub lunch and you can catch up with your friends over a pint of boutique cider from Sydney rather than cocktails.

Apart from making really fun days out or dates, the Canberra beer festival is a great way to expand your palette and get to know both the Canberra region breweries as well as a handpicked selection from interstate.

You may be a wine buff who can smell their way around the Canberra Region Wineries, but now’s the time to learn how to pair beer and cider with food – and cook with it too!

This year sees the festival expand to 50 events across 20 venues until Wednesday 11 November including tap takeovers, tasting events, food matchings and much more.

Here’s our list of events to book a place at ASAP.

I am a huge fan of Quiet Deeds’ Lamington Ale, which is a brown ale with chocolate and toasted coconut flavours. It’s the grown up version of the lamington!

My favourite craft beers overall are either Rogue Yellow Snow or Brew Dog Punk IPA. In terms of Australian craft beers I really love the Crankshaft at Bentspoke and also think that both Moo Brew and the Two Metre Tall brewing Company in Tasmania do some great beers!

I had an amazing red ale (a variety which is weirdly scarce in Aus?) at Brooklyn Brewery (I know, I’m a jerk) last year which had been brewed specifically for New York Comic Con, called ‘The Defender’. I don’t know if it was because I was on holiday, or because it was a one time only variety, or if it was genuinely the best beer I’d had, but I still think about it more than a year later. DELICIOUS.

Seven Sheds SIPA St Ella India Pale Ale – get yourself to Tassie and check it out (plus all the other delicious beer + wine + whisky + gin + food they’re creating down there).

Got to sample the Cluster 12 from a sneaky BentSpoke traveler the other night. Went down perfectly with the homemade, woodfired pizza! And helped to drown out the 8 screaming kids under the age of 5 running around the backyard.

I really can’t go passed the Pact Mt Tennent Pale Ale. Only tried it a few weeks ago, but it is an absolute cracker of a beer!

I am definitely going to enjoy Canberra Craft Beer Week! Especially now I know there is a new Pact beer being launched in the middle of it! Happy days!
