Backyard cricket, BBQ, Hampers and icy poles: Australia Day at Pialligo Estate

Posted on

After a difficult start to summer, Pialligo Estate is enticing Canberrans to kick back in our own territory, keep it local and relax together on Australia Day.

For many Canberrans, the upcoming long weekend represents a chance to switch off and get back to the basics of an Aussie summer—sunshine, good food, friends and family. And this year, there’s no better place to do that than at Pialligo Estate.

With a huge day of family-friendly foodie fun planned across the afternoon of Sunday 26 January, the Estate will be rolling out the red, white and blue carpet to celebrate our great country and its values.

“It’s time to celebrate our strong, resilient nation and come together for some family fun and enjoy quality time getting back to Aussie basics,” says Pialligo Estate’s General Manager Scott Taylor.

“We have all been watching and absorbing the sadness around the country over the past weeks, and we’ve all been affected somehow, in some way…the only way to get back on our feet is do what we do best—support each other, our farmers, our communities, everyone.”

“Our positive attitude as a nation is so important right now, and that’s why we still want to give Canberra an environment to do this in.”

Celebrations will take place in one of the Estate’s newest spaces—Pialligo Fields, and for this special day, will take advantage of the adjacent lawns and paddock for the ultimate backyard experience.

A chic venue perfect for summer, the Fields’ shady indoor area (complete with Gintonica Bar) will be the perfect haven for a refreshing drink, while outdoors in the gardens you’ll find plenty of space for little ones to run around—as well as opportunity to soak up the sun with a spot of backyard cricket in the open paddock.

We’ve no doubt some friendly competition will make an appearance! There’ll be some other games and activities too for the big and little kids, so it’s going to be a special excuse for the whole family to leave the house and not lift a finger.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Pialligo Estate celebration without a fabulous food spread, and for this, the Estate’s chefs have gone back to Aussie basics—think a gourmet BBQ with Estate meats and smoked goods, plenty of salads and some Aussie sweet treats with a twist.

This will be washed down with some local brews from BentSpoke Brewing and paired with mellow background beats from a DJ. There will also be plentiful zooper doopers for little ones.

“We source our ingredients from as local as we can, so every snag is helping someone else out. Tickets include a glass of wine, but because we want to promote local, we’ve also put together our preferred list of regional wines that we recommend to keep the dollars where they need to be right now.”

To keep the resilient community of Australia front of mind, guests will be encouraged to assist those in need on the day, with a Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery donation box.

If, however, you insist on doing your own cooking on the long weekend and want to host your own party, you can still bring a slice of the Estate to your own celebrations with their gourmet hampers—don’t make more work for yourself than you have to!

This includes the limited-edition Super Dooper Australia Day BBQ Box, the Australia Day BBQ Box and the ultimate Charcuterie and Cheese Hamper, which include a selection of Smokehouse products and pantry items, such as beef, pork and lamb gourmet sausages, famous Estate-smoked bacon, the renowned house-made BBQ sauce, spice rubs and much more. Check them out at pialligofarm.com.au

“We want to give back to the community as well, so for every Australia Day Hamper sold, we’ll donate 10% of the profits to Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery as well. We can all do our bit to keep the contributions ongoing – the effects of the bushfires is going to be long felt.”
