League of Extraordinary Women: Pave your own path
Posted on
Women achieve extraordinary things every day. From bearing children to starting their own business, the spectrum is wide and varied.
But while there are numerous mothers’ groups and mummy blogs that offer support and platforms for women to voice their concerns, ask questions and share their stories around motherhood, the resources available for women in business are still in their infancy.
Particularly in Canberra.
Enter the League of Extraordinary Women—a movement of young female entrepreneurs very much alive in the nation’s capital and looking for successful women like you.
The story goes that from a chance encounter at an entrepreneurial event in Melbourne, four female entrepreneurs launched the League in 2011 over coffee and cupcakes. Two weeks later through their passion and effort, 180 women gathered in a bar over wine to connect, support, motivate and inspire each other.
Earlier this year, Amanda Whitley spent five minutes with Canberra Crusader Deanne Brennan to find out more about the League but since their chat in February, a change of circumstances has seen Dee step down from the role. Yet the League has not faltered with creator of The Orange Lantern, Helen Roe stepping into Dee’s shoes to continue inspiring and motivating Canberra women.

This Tuesday (1 July), the League will again host its monthly breakfast at The Burbury Hotel where the passionate and bold designer will share tales of her entrepreneurial journey that led her to found Pure Pod, an Australian pioneer eco fashion label.
Launched in 2007, the Canberra born and bred designer worked in the ‘rag trade’ for 20 years disillusioned by the unreal reality of commercial fashion before she realised that her industry was one of the world’s biggest polluters.
Now one of Australia’s largest ethical fashion brands, Pure Pod is Donovan’s way of doing her bit for the planet because it’s no secret that we’re all living on borrowed time from “Mother” Earth. She emphasises that it’s not just designer and product makers who should be working with the planet not against it.
“We should live by the philosophy to ‘leave it as we found it’,” Kelli says.
To hear more about Kelli’s journey, and if you’d to meet other women like yourself, then join Kelli Donovan and Helen Roe at the League of Extraordinary Women breakfast this week.
Banish that feeling of isolation as you grow your business and find the support you need. I promise that you’ll leave the breakfast feeling inspired, empowered and just that little bit extraordinary!
So go on – pave your own path, make a difference and dream BIG!
