Three micro-adventures you can have this weekend—no matter how much time you have
Posted on
I will admit, when our travel writer Tenele Conway wrote this article about micro-adventures back in March 2019, I wasn’t super on board.
While I was impressed by the concept of micro-adventures—small trips close to home that take the place of longer holidays— and her innovative ideas, I wasn’t exactly the target audience.
After all, I wasn’t that keen on camping or bushwalking, preferring to save my adventures for trips interstate or overseas.
Well, fast forward 18 months and you better believe I’m stoked for a micro-adventure or three.
With all overseas travel put on hold until…well, let’s just not think about it, it’s time to embrace the adventures around us.
Here are three you can have this weekend—no matter how much time you have to spare.
If you have a couple of hours…indulge in cannoli at Italian Continental Bakery in Mawson
Take a trip to Italy…in Mawson!
The Italian Continental Bakery has an impressive reputation for being a little slice of Italia in Canberra—and their cannoli is the star of the show.
Why not take a road trip to deliciousness? Italian phrasebook and red lipstick optional.

If you have half a day…do breakfast in Bungendore

Believe it or not, you can even squeeze this micro-adventure into a *gasp* weekday.
That’s right. Yesterday, two friends and I piled into a car and headed out to Bungendore for breakfast with the aim to be back before work.
Driving down Macs Reef Road as the sun rolled over the hills was certainly a more uplifting start to the day than pressing the buttons on my Nespresso, and breakfast at The Gathering Cafe was delicious.
It was a little sad to turn around and drive back to Canberra as it kind of felt like the start of a coast trip, but I’m so grateful we did it. It was like we squeezed a little slice of the weekend into what would have just been another day.
I made it into work by 9.30 am and traffic wasn’t even a challenge! Win!

If you have a full day…take a trip to Braidwood

Braidwood is the perfect day trip—barely an hour’s drive from Canberra with stunning scenery along the way.
There’s so much to do in Braidwood that we wrote a huge eat, drink, shop, stay article about it back in December, which you can read here.
But, in a nutshell, coffee and breakfast at The Albion, artisanal jewellery and cool-as clothing from CTK Store (formerly MR MR), bread from DOJO Bread, plants, coffee and homewares from Deadwood, crystals and boho clothing from Blue Kingdom, gourmet bits and pieces from Provisions Deli, bespoke clothing from Saloon, antique furniture from almost everywhere and amazing takeaway pizza from Casanovas. Plenty to fill a day (or two).

You could even roll all these micro-adventures into one! Brekky in Bungendore, the day in Braidwood and then cannoli on the way home. Anyone up for the challenge?
