Since launching her photography business full-time in 2006, Kelly Tunney has been a force of nature in the Canberra wedding industry, winning over 50 awards for her stunning work and most recently, being the first female to win the AIPP Australian Wedding Photographer of the Year, and last year taking out 2017 ACT Wedding Photographer of the Year at the 2017 AIPP ACT Epson Professional Photography Awards.

Her images are strikingly artistic and yet completely intimate, capturing newlyweds in shots that aren’t just sentimental memories, but artworks that wouldn’t look out of place in a national institution.

But it’s also Kelly’s personable and warm nature that makes her so popular, with her previous clients lauding her ability to be in exactly the right place at the right time to catch the perfect shot while letting the big day naturally unfold by itself.

Kelly says one of the main challenges ahead for the world of photography is “standing out from the crowd.”

“Now with Pinterest and blogging, there’s so much inspiration and photography in our faces so it’s actually really hard as an artist to stand alone,” she says.

“I think experience is the key, it’s important you have a photographer who can handle sometimes unexpected situations. I also think it’s important to show diversity and not sort of pigeon hole yourself.”

“What I’ve learnt is classic, contemporary and timeless always shines through. For me it’s about the emotive: weddings are very emotional for people and there’s a lot of energy but at the same time I want to show people their wedding is very unique.”
