Canberra Centre unveils their autumn/winter looks for 2014

Posted on

Have you switched on the heaters and brought the extra blankets out of storage yet?  Or do you consider yourself a bit of a stickler for tradition, holding out until the ANZAC Day long weekend to get the heat cranking?  Either way, I think we can all agree that Canberra’s crisp autumn days are well and truly here, a stark reminder that the dreaded winter frost is next in line.

If you’re worried you might find yourself caught out in the cold this winter, the Canberra Centre’s style department have got you covered; last week revealing their autumn/winter looks for 2014.

The mysterious “Guardians of Style” were summoned back to their (now-not-so-secret) headquarters, where the living mannequins showcased the Canberra Centre’s five key trends of the season: Modern Lady, Oceanic, Metallics, Leather Luxe and Print Clash.

Modern Lady

Reminiscent of mid-century Style Icons like Grace Kelly and Jackie Onassis, Modern Lady plays with midi-length skirts and cinched waists in an array of romantic corals and creams. This look is all about fitted, functional clothing that will show off your shape, whatever that may be.

Oceanic

Think deep, dramatic blues. Cobalt, navy and teal are all prominent colours featured in the Oceanic trend. Mix and match the different shades for a statement look, or chose a single item, like a fitted, cobalt blazer with black cigarette trousers, for a modern look you can wear to work.

Metallics

A bit of sparkle never hurt anyone, and Metallics is probably the easiest trend to follow if you’re on a budget. Adding a gold, metallic belt or a glo-mesh bag to any outfit is the fastest way to feel a bit fancy on those drizzly winter nights.

 Leather Luxe

You may have noticed faux and genuine leather skirts, dresses and pants popping up in stores this time last year, and it looks like this trend is back for round two. The leather look adds a bit of edge to any outfit, whether you keep it classic with a cropped motto-jacket over your favourite dress, or make a bit more of a statement in a leather look pinafore or skater skirt.

 Print Clash

This trend is all about being counter intuitive. If you’re feeling adventurous, mix bold animal prints with plaid. Or, take it down notch; pairing different sized gingham prints in matching black and grey hues. The best part about print clashing is the endless possibilities.

Print Clash and Modern Lady are my picks for this season, spotting a few ‘investment’ items that I hope to make mine very soon. I was particularly mesmerised by the Canberra Centre’s great range of accessories this autumn/winter, displaying a lot of cool, retro-style eyewear by Prada and Zara, as well as a few modern, bejewelled clutches by Mimco.

All of the items featured in this story are available in store at the Canberra Centre. The Canberra Centre will also be hosting a series of fashion focussed activities and competitions this season. Check out canberracentre.com.au for more details.
