Canberra Balloon Spectacular: what to know before you go

Posted on

Bold and buoyant, the Canberra Balloon Spectacular is back again in March.

One of the highlights of Canberra’s biggest month, the Canberra Balloon Spectacular celebrates the beauty of crisp autumn mornings and the intriguing landscape of our city.

For both spectators on the ground and those in the air, the once-a-year event is a chance to marvel at the simple yet seemingly impossible mechanics of hot air balloons as they take to the sky from the lawns of Old Parliament House.

This year, the Spectacular is part of Enlighten Festival 2018 and represents a unique counterpoint to the after-dark illuminations, giving you the opportunity for see Canberra in the very first light of the day.

Even if you’re not booking tickets to ride in one of the 30 balloons that will be taking off this March (although we highly recommend you do!), there’s still lots to see, do , and eat on the ground. Here’s what to know before you go.

NEW BALLOONS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Two special shapes from the USA will be taking to the skies this year—Kermie The Frog and the Hummingbird. Keep an eye out for them, as well as a host of other colourful craft.

PREPARATION

Pilots will begin inflating the balloons from 6.15 am each day of the Spectacular, so it’s a good idea to get there then, or soon after, as they usually take 15-30 minutes to inflate. Most balloons will launch at 7 am sharp.

Since it’s autumn, you can expect some chilly mornings, so make sure to wear warm layers and comfortable covered shoes as you’ll likely want to walk on grass, which may be wet. Bringing pets to the event is also discouraged.

WHAT IF THE WEATHER TURNS?

Ballooning is completely weather-dependent, so it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on social media if you’re concerned about the forecast. Information on whether or not the balloons will fly will be advised daily at 6.15 am and distributed via enlightencanberra.com/balloons, Enlighten’s Facebook and Access Canberra. Key local radio stations are also notified.

WANT TO TAKE OFF?

If you’re not content to watch the balloons from the ground, passenger flights can be purchased via Balloon Aloft (6249 8660) and Dawn Drifters (6248 8200). A hot air balloon flight really is a unique and dreamy experience, and offers a unique perspective on Canberra.

GETTING THERE + PARKING

Parking in the Parliamentary Triangle is your best option, but be aware that paid parking applies on business days from 8.30 am.

It’s also useful to note that Kings Edward Terrace will be closed from Parkes Place East to Parkes Place West from 5.45am to approximately 9.45am on each day of the Canberra Balloon Spectacular.

Standard ACTION bus timetables also apply for the duration of the Spectacular.

FOOD AND DRINK

There’s nothing better than enjoying breakfast and a coffee al fresco as you watch the balloons lift off.

To keep your bellies warm and minds awake, the Lion’s Club of Belconnen will be selling breakfast and warm beverages each morning, with proceeds going to select local charities.

After something some international flavours” Mr Papa Peruvian Street Food will be selling breakfast burritos, coffee and juices; Le Petit Breton will offer up sweet and savoury crepes; and Poffertjes will be dishing out Dutch pancakes with a variety of toppings.

As for those who prefer their mornings caffeinated, Mobile Espresso Cafe will be selling coffee and some baked goods.

START THE MORNING ON A HIGH NOTE

Each weekend across the event, including the public holiday, live music will feature at the launch site. Acts include Will Campbell, Matilda Rose, The Advocates, Chesterfield and Dom Lavers. Click here for specific dates.

SAFETY

Here are a few tips for staying safe through the Spectacular.

  • If a balloon is launching or landing near you, stand well clear and not in front of where the balloon is heading.
  • Stay well clear of all equipment and walk around, not over ropes.
  • Ensure young children are closely supervised at all times.
  • Follow instructions issued by pilots and crew.
  • Do not smoke near the balloons. Highly flammable propane gas is used in the inflation process.
  • If you are driving while balloons are overhead, please watch the road and not the balloons. Or alternatively pull over and stop in a safe place.
  • Pets can be frightened by the balloons and noise of the gas burners. Be mindful of this if the balloons are overhead and take necessary precautions.
