The moment the curtain first went up on the original West Side Story on Broadway, musical theatre changed forever.

Bell Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing
Much Ado About Nothing is a saucy and razor-sharp battle of wits between the bickering Beatrice and Benedick, who wield words as weapons, their banter betraying their love for each other.
Claudio, however, is quickly consumed by envy and his idyllic world threatens to come tumbling down as he humiliates Hero. Beatrice and Benedick must join forces to defend true love – even if they can’t recognise it in themselves.
But will truth and honesty win the day, and does love really conquer all?
Directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Associate Director, James Evans (Julius Caesar)and starring Zindzi Okenyo (Antony and Cleopatra, MTC’s An Ideal Husband) as Beatrice, this Much Ado About Nothing will be a powerful exploration of the struggle for identity and self-knowledge in a male-dominated world. The pursuit of love is framed in a social context that enhances the darker themes in this timeless comic gem.
Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s contemporary comedies where romance is thwarted by dastardly plots, misinformation, false accusations, broken promises, and bumbling cops. Or is it?
Happening until 19 October at Canberra Theatre Centre.

Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms is a Shepparton Art Museum curated exhibition, touring nationally by NETS Victoria.

Some works encourage social connection and participation in collective processes, others respond to artistic or political movements and yet others reveal that the personal remains political.

CAMPBELL/JOHNSTONE/CLARKE/SUTTON
A celebration of the Tenor Saxophone/Guitar collaborations in Jazz.
The guitar and tenor saxophone enjoyed a close relationship even before the invention of the amplifier, which dates back to the 1930’s; this is exemplified in the recordings of Django Reinhardt and Coleman Hawkins.
However, it was the electrification of the guitar that began exciting collaborations involving the two instruments. The guitarist could not only assume the role of soloist alongside his tenor saxophonist companion, but also work alongside the tenor to provide a new and exciting accompaniment.
A case in point being tenor players such as Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz, who stated they preferred the partnership where space and rhythm were created by the guitar.
Con Campbell and Chris Johnstone have long enjoyed this type of musical collaboration since they first met at the Canberra School of Music in 1997. Con going on to not only win the James Morrison jazz Scholarship but recording with the trumpet maestro himself.
Join them for a night of celebrating musical creativity when these two instruments are combined and joined by an outstanding rhythm section provided by Brendan Clarke (Double bass) and Mark Sutton (Drums).

Happy and Glorious
The Queen’s Visit in 1954. The phrase conjures up memories of a young Queen in summer dresses and ball gowns, crowds of Australians excitedly waving flags and charming tableaus spelling out heartfelt messages.
Old Parliament House was central to the royal tour while the Queen was in Canberra. The Queen alighted from the Daimler and walked up the front steps in her coronation gown to rousing cheers. She was escorted through King’s Hall by a very proud Prime Minister Menzies to attend the State Banquet. In her most formal duty, the Queen opened the 20th Parliament in the Senate Chamber. A room in the President of the Senate’s suite was redecorated and furnished for her private use while she was in the house.
Relive the memories of her visit at the Happy and Glorious exhibition. Enter the very room the Queen used while she was at Old Parliament House.

Are you finding it hard to get active since having kids? Perhaps it’s time for you to Meet & Move!
Meet & Move is a new, active playgroup. It’s facilitator, Nicole Sadlier from Bluearth, knows that it can be hard to get out of the house when you have young kids. But like she says “When you do get outside, you feel much better. Your mood improves and you feel refreshed and more energetic!”
Meet & Move sessions occur outdoors and include a pram-friendly, baby-wearing friendly walk, gentle yoga-style stretching or toning exercises (selected sessions) and a chance for the kids to burn off some energy at a playground or to walk/bike with the group.
It also engages parents and their kids in activities which develop skills such as running, kicking, balancing, throwing and catching. Their focus is to make movement fun and help parents to bank more active time into their day.
Join one of their free weekly sessions which run on Monday – Thursday from 10 am during the school term. Full details for locations can be found on Facebook.
Meet & Move is a program of the Bluearth Foundation, working in partnership with Mums Exercise Group Australia (MEGA) Canberra and supported by ACT Government under the ACT Health Promotion Grants Program. Hive and Seek Market
Set in the heart of Queanbeyan in the grounds of The Queanbeyan Hive, ‘Hive and Seek’ is a new grassroots market designed to encourage members of the community to engage in ethical exchange and sustainability.
It is also about supporting local makers and artists; giving old things a new life and bringing community together to share stories and make new connections.
There will be yummy food, a clothes-swap line, music and a retro dress up theme – and many pre-loved items and hand-made goods for sale.
Be that brilliant artwork, bric-a-brac, vintage, clothing, books, jewellery, seconds, books, hand-made, shoes, records, badges, music, cards, handmade paper…… you name it!
The owners of The Queanbeyan Hive believe in up-cycling and re-purposing where possible. This has been the philosophy they have followed in the restoration of the 1910 Heritage-listed George Hudson Kit home.
The award-winning cottage itself is an artform with its original press-tinned walls, ornate ceilings and rimu-timber floors. Opened as a gallery there are also some boutique studio/office rooms now available for lease.
Six Richard Larter paintings are on exhibition as part of the local Queanbeyan Palarang Regional Arts Trail which is also on the same weekend. Also, not to be overlooked is a new exhibition titled ‘Overlooked’.
Photographer Harry Napier-Rowney and sculptors Llewellyn McGarry and Martin Rowney (Harry’s dad) all embody the notion of observing and celebrating the overlooked and forgotten details of life.
The works of art acknowledge the modest and everyday objects that inhabit our daily lives, their beauty and design, the stories they embody, their latent charm and perhaps their undeniable ordinariness.
Happening Saturday 19 October from 8 am – 2 pm at 274 Crawford Street, Queanbeyan.

In just his second solo exhibition, Samuel articulates the multi-dimensional and layered role the NRL plays in today’s society, with its unique blend of a traditional masculine power structure and emotional openness. It’s a realm where men are free to express feelings that – beyond the playing field and changerooms – would be looked upon by many as unusual, uncomfortable and unacceptable.
Featuring over 30 works spanning acrylic paintings, ceramics, animation, sound design and LED neon, Samuel presents a domain laden with both contradiction and camaraderie and explores sport’s potential as a progressive platform for masculinity.

COLLISION: CONFLICT OF SACRED REALITIES BY FATIMA KILLEEN
Collision draws attention to the conflict of sacred realities between East and West. The works are inspired by Islamic art with its Arab culture alongside references to Andalusian heritage. It is a celebration of beauty and generosity, bringing understanding and resolve to the negative stereotype surrounding the Arab and Muslim communities in Australia.
The works shed light on the fragility of culture and tradition; an insight into the struggling and divided communities living with complex issues and a persistent national media contingent continuously broadcasting messages of condemnation and disapproval. Collision engages people and invites them to a dialogue of understanding and tolerance. The installations communicate a unique cultural and spiritual perspective and a universal message of peace. The exhibition expresses concerns for the humanitarian, political and environmental impact that Western control has imposed on Arab and Muslim countries. Irrespective of the emphasis on the destruction of war, the works provide a space for contemplation and healing.
Fatima Killeen believes that a unified society of multicultural components is what guarantees tolerance, coherence and the wellbeing of the environment which we all share. Diversity is determined by our respect for the logic of nature and belief in multiculturalism.

ON THE EDGE BY CHRISTINE SCOTT
Christine Scott’s work explores states of order/disorder, harmony/chaos and identity relating to environment. She works with paper which she cuts or carves to create images. Cutting paper produces a positive and negative vision of that which is taken and that which is left. Often it is the skeletal features and the unseen structure that is exposed. Through these positive and negative images and the layering of forms and symbolic shapes, she aims to encourage questions about the meanings and references encased in the works.
The eucalyptus leaves and flowers denote the land of Australia. These trees cover all of our land, and grow in many forms and places in wild and beautiful ways. In Scott’s work, the branches are confined, shaped and ordered by the human hand to form a beautiful but fragile ornament. She uses colour to enhance the meaning and layering of her works. Using colour creates new positives and new negatives while also referencing the colours of land, sea and states of movement within. Exploring these diverse states of living within and being surrounded by nature is a consistent theme in Scott’s work.
Happening until 27 October at Belconnen Arts Centre.

Tom Buckland: Apollo Lunar Module (1:2 Scale) 2019
Fifty years ago, landing on the moon required a vehicle not designed for this world, so the Apollo Lunar Module was born.
One of the most improbable flying machines ever conceived, artist Tom Buckland has been fuelled by a fascination with crewed spaceflight and the lunar module was quite an obsession. On the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing, Buckland has used blueprints, official photographs and several model kits as reference, to construct his own half-scale replica of the Eagle Lunar Module. The ephemeral materials he has used are a reminder of how fragile the original craft now seems.
Developed for the exhibition Promised the Moon at School of Art Gallery ANU, the work now takes its second flight to Civic Square.

onetoeight: Australia’s first prime ministers
Visually arresting, humorous and thoughtful, Canberra-based artist Alison Alder reinterprets and reinvigorates portraits of the first eight prime ministers in onetoeight, a contemporary art exhibition. Developed from Alder’s fellowship with the Australian Prime Ministers Centre and motivated by the early period of our nation’s democracy, onetoeight brings these important historical figures a little bit closer to us.
Inspired by a picture of Stanley Bruce’s cabinet where they were all wearing a lapel badge, Alder presents each prime minister wearing at least one badge to reference a key aspect of their time in office. Neither explicitly positive or negative, we are left to form our own opinion.
Through the portraits, intense patterned wallpaper honouring the prime minister’s wives and a Term-O-Meter animation tracking the changing political hues of individuals and governments, Alder gives us a sense of our nation’s history that is lively, dynamic and parallels the present day.
