Screenagers coming to a screen near you

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span?

Now is the time to stop and unpack how to negotiate parenting in a digital world with a special screening of a film devoted to the issue and a Questions and Answer session with experts at Dendy Cinema next week.

American doctor and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw her own kids becoming increasingly absorbed on their devices, learning that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

In her latest documentary SCREENAGERS, Delany probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. She discusses the impact of technology with psychologists, and brain scientists and offers solutions on how adults can
empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

Delany and her daughter will be in Canberra next week for a screening of the film hosted by Australian Parents Council. At the same time the council will launch a national conversation on parenting in the digital age #parentech – www.parentech.com.au. 

APC seeks to connect parents to discuss all the challenges inherent in the digital world –  noting that navigating ways to both empower learning and protect our children can be tricky, confusing and time-consuming. But there has never been a more important time as parents to get this right.
